The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Write a thematic analysis of The Rime of the Ancient MarinerSample student essay-1

The assignment for week 12 is to write a research essay on Rime of the Ancient Mariner For your essay, you will write a thematic analysis of Coleridge’s poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.  This analysis should be about 1000 words long, in MLA format with a works cited page (5 sources total: the poem, three critical sources from the TCC databases, and whatever else you choose), your analysis should include opinions from three critical essays with appropriate analysis of each source and contain a thesis that argues the significance of one theme: (only suggestions below) Nature Sin Penance Guilt Redemption Story-telling Terror Supernatural   avoid the obvious (in other words, it won’t argue a conclusion that most readers could reach on their own from a general knowledge of the story) support its main points with strong evidence from the poem use careful reasoning to explain how evidence relates to the main points of the interpretation  like Gale Literary Sources (a Google search is inappropriate for the critical sources – they MUST come from a literature database)   Some points to consider: When incorporating research into an essay, it’s essential to introduce the material, cite the quotation/paraphrase, follow it with your own explanation/analysis. The essay should focus primarily on your thoughts and analysis; the literary criticism (research) is to expand your thinking.  The essay is not a report about what other critics think. You should have more examples/quotations from the poem as your support than passages from other critics. Feel free to disagree with the critics; just because they have been published, doesn’t mean that you have to agree with them.
