Policy Advocacy Project: Cybercrime – ransomware

As a result of the growing number of people using the internet, there has been growth in cybercrime cases across the globe. Ransomware is one of the most common types of cybercrimes. It has over the years grown exponentially, where cybercriminals hold a victim’s information at ransom. The criminals encrypt personal data to ensure that the victims cannot access files, databases, and applications, where they then demand ransom to provide access(Connolly & Wall, 2019).  This is an emerging problem faced by many countries worldwide and ought to be addressed by both the government and other non-state actors, to ensure that sustainable solutions to the challenge are attained.  There is, therefore, a need to advocate for a war against ransomware and other cyberthreats sincethis is one of the developing global threats likely to negativelyaffect governments, organizations, and individuals.

One of the best policy options that can be used to combat this type of crime is enacting laws and regulations by the legislative bodies. The policies need to include the kind of punishments that cybercriminals should face and how governments can collaborate to curb this growing challenge(Nadir & Bakhshi, 2018). Excellent laws and regulations also make it easy to arrest and prosecute the preparators through excellent procedures and ensure that they are severely punished for their acts.

There is also a need for more partnerships and collaborations between the government, the private sector, and civil society. These collaborations are vital in that they will enable the two parties to share innovative ideas and action plans on who to curb the issue of surging cases of cybercrimes and incidences of ransomware. The collaborations can also help ensure that any developments in cybercriminals’ tactics are shared and criminal activities are prevented before they escalate and result in massive losses to companies and individuals.
