Sharon, a medical assistant, has worked for a family practitioner for 10 years. In the past, she has been allowed to contact the pharmacy for prescription refills for patients. Her boyfriend has been experiencing back pain after a disc herniation. Paula, wanting to help, writes several prescriptions over a 6-month period for a scheduled drug to relieve his pain. The pharmacist notices the frequency of these prescriptions and calls the family practitioner to ask if he is aware of this patient. The family practitioner says he is not. He confronts Paula, who admits the patient is her boyfriend and that she has been writing the prescriptions herself and stamping them with the family practitioner’s signature.
