Principles of Management

INTERVIEW ESSAY.

For this paper, we will be interviewing Roderick John, the current operations manager of Allied universal company. Firstly, John explains that he has undergone numerous life changes and challenges to become a manager. He has to study since he has a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a Master of Accounting from CSU. Additionally, he has worked as an employee and assistant manager for many companies, including Fargo Well and Allied Universal. This provided him with the skills and competencies to become a great manager.

John explained to me that his professional certification and continued education had provided him with job opportunities. For example, during the interview process, he was the only candidate with a master’s degree and over twelve years of experience; therefore, he could get the job. During his time off and weekends, he usually enjoys community service as a CSR program for his organization, which has built a good reputation and client loyalty.

Contrary to the popular belief that leaders should rule harshly, I was surprised to learn that communication and positive interaction between employees and management are the best tools for success. John examples that good leaders should be willing to sit with their employees to understand their problems and develop collective and democratic decisions. Therefore, one should not rule in isolation.

The role of organizational goals is to ensure that the team’s goals are aligned with the general organizational goals. Therefore, the objectives of management ensure that the team’s activity is within and relative to the organization’s overall goals. At the same time, communication is essential for increased productivity in the organization. According to John, communication is not just used to clarify to employees what they should do but also to encourage and motivate them to keep delivering organizational goals.

John manages change in his organization, and some potential challenges faced include resistance from employees. Since people are often against change, motivating them to shift to the new way of doing things is difficult.

John advice to me include first meeting the highest level of education to increase my employability. Secondly, I should attempt to look for better job opportunities by avoiding being in a comfort zone. He says that one cannot grow and develop within a single day; there is a need to seek better opportunities to empower others. Another piece of advice is to be ready from successful people; this is because of their experience and prolonged service. Finally, I should be ready to make continued research in my field, this will help me understand the trends and changes that I should abide by.

The outline

From the interview with John, we have learned and understood different aspects of an organizational leader and manager that one should understand. Firstly, is on the importance of communication throughout the organization; this does not only help to offer organization goals to employees but also creates a social and productive organization since they feel like part of the management. Secondly is essential for managers to use democratic processes when making organizational decisions; this is where the leadership involves the subordinate’s groups in deciding for matters that may affect employee welfare.

As a manager, it is also essential to establish excellent relations between society and the organization through CSR (corporate social responsibility programs). This ensures that the community feels like part of the organization. For example, an organization may promote sustainability, support local children’s homes, sponsor sports and games, etc. Finally, it is also essential for leaders to understand how continued improvement may lead to self-development. Whereas a leader should ensure that they explore new opportunities through research and apply for better jobs if they find a vacancy. Also, young leaders should invest in education to improve their current knowledge, skills, and competencies to manage complex organizational activities.
