The paper should revolve around one relatively narrow and precise research question, answerable using existing and readily available source material. The following are examples of sensible research questions: • Was Ho Chi Minh a nationalist or a communist? • Why did communism develop a sizeable following in Vietnam in the early part of the 20th century? • Why did the United States decide to come to the assistance of France in Indochina in 1950? • What was the most important factor in prompting direct US military involvement in Vietnam in 1965? • Is there any truth to the notion that the war in Vietnam was a civil war more than a neo-colonial war or a superpower proxy war? • What was the role of the Soviet Union and/or China in the Vietnam War? • What was the impact of the American and/or global antiwar movement on the course and outcome of the Vietnam War? • How did the Vietnam War change Vietnam? How did it change the United States? How did it change the world? The final paper must: • be 5-8 pages in length (typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1″ margins on all sides); • include a bibliography of no fewer than 10 sources, including at least 3 primary sources; • include endnotes or footnotes
