Christmas and Alcohol, America’s Problem

Description

Read these directions aloud to yourself a couple of times and contact me if you have any questions. Take your time! For the final project, I’d like you to select your TWO strongest papers from papers 1-4 and continue to grow and improve them. Revision is often a process of “re-seeing” the topic, finding fresh angles and developing new ideas. Sometimes it involves asking the hard question, “why should my readers care about this?” and then changing the paper so that readers do care. In my feedback on your papers, I have tried to offer some ideas for developing paper content. Read this feedback aloud to yourself so that it really sinks in. Contact me if something isn’t clear. Your papers must show evolution in terms of content. If my suggestions were helpful and you can work with them, great. If not, then you have to figure out a way to develop your topics further. Each of your papers must exceed 1,750 words in length. Each paper must integrate multiple quotations from our textbook. Do not include the works cited page in your word count total. Revision is also a process of separating hits from misses—identifying what works and what doesn’t in a paper. As you read your work, adopt the role of a reader and ask, what is working here? What isn’t working? You might have to throw away some material. That’s OK. Research must come into play as you develop your work. In fact, my comments on your papers might have pointed out possible research angles. Research shows that you are building your knowledge about a topic and entering into a scholarly conversation about it. Thus, a new requirement is that each paper must incorporate at least three sources besides the textbook. These sources must provide information that is non-common knowledge. Do not count original works of popular culture, such as songs or movies, as satisfying the research requirement. Take care with documentation. Make sure there is correspondence between the works cited entries and the in-text citations. Both are necessary for documentation to be complete. Take care not to overquote. Directly quoted sources must not exceed 20% of the total number of words in either essay. Revision also involves re-working and fine-tuning sentences, much as we did in our sentence workshops. I highly recommend that you find a friend to read your papers back aloud to you, so that you can hear any nonsense or awkwardness. You’ve simply got to involve the ears as much as you can in your writing. Read your work back aloud to yourself as well. The ears catch what the eyes don’t see. You may have discovered this semester that you have some tendencies in your writing, such as sentence fragments or missed commas. Edit your work several times, on the lookout for these problems. Go to the Learning Center for proofreading assistance. Show respect for your readers by catching errors. When grading, I will weigh sentence skills more heavily than I have on earlier assignments. Do not expect a passing score if you have frequent mistakes and serious grammatical errors such as fragments and comma splices. Make sure you have the proper format for citations and the works cited entries. Both are required for the paper to meet minimum requirements for documentation. An incorrect works cited format for the textbook reflects very poorly on your work, because models have been provided all semester. If a paper plagiarizes, or if a reader cannot easily locate your sources, then it does not meet the course and college academic honesty requirements and does not earn points. Upload your two papers as one document. Send a back up document in Word to me over e-mail as well. The final project is worth 150 points and will be evaluated according to our grading guide. Let me know at any time if I can help you to be successful with this project!
