Book paper: Manchild in the Promised Land

A book reviewer for the New York Times concluded that Claude Brown’s Manchild in the Promised Land was, “The first thing I ever read which gave me an idea of what it would be like day by day if I’d grown up in Harlem.” Describe some of the events from the book that show what this reviewer meant.  Be as specific as you can about these events, but be sure to show how they demonstrate the difficulties faced in the urban cities of the north. Answers like: “There was lots racism,” or “People used drugs” is not sufficient—you need to make specific references to people and events in the book that show this racism—in other words you need to show me the answer, rather than simply telling me.
