Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

There is a clear relationship between academic integrity and writing. When nurse-scholars write, they must be sure to present their work accurately and honestly (Olson & Stokes, 2016). This means ensuring that all information is properly cited and that any misrepresentations are avoided. In addition, nurse-scholars must be careful to use proper formatting and grammar when writing. Failing to do so can result in papers that are not taken seriously by academic professionals.

Professional practices and scholarly ethics are also closely related. Nurse-scholars must adhere to the highest standards of professionalism to be taken seriously by their peers. Such includes ensuring that all work is accurate and ethical and that personal biases do not interfere with the presentation of data (Olson & Stokes, 2016). Additionally, scholars must avoid plagiarism at all costs. Plagiarism is the act of passing off someone else’s work as your own, and it can be easily detected by software such as Grammarly and Safe Assign (Bromfield, 2018). Paraphrasing also plays a role in academic integrity, as it allows writers to use source material without plagiarizing. By properly paraphrasing information, scholars can ensure that they are giving proper credit to the original author.

All these tools can help nurse-scholars maintain academic integrity while writing. Grammarly and Safe Assign are both software programs that can detect plagiarism in papers. Programs like Safe Assign and Grammarly all contribute to academic integrity because it helps hold the author accountable for what was written. Paraphrasing also helps to prevent plagiarism, as it allows writers to use source material without directly quoting it (Bromfield, 2018). Finally, proper formatting and grammar can make papers more readable and professional-looking. These elements all contribute to a paper’s overall academic integrity.
