This week we will discuss professional issues that impact the clinical practice of the PMHNP. To participate in this week’s discussion, complete the steps as outlined below and submit your response to the discussion board.

Be sure and respond to at least 2 of your colleagues and compare strategies to influence health policy.

Overview: Phenomena of concern for psychiatric-mental health nurses are dynamic, exist in all populations across the lifespan and include:

• Promotion of optimal mental and physical health and well-being
• Prevention of mental and behavioral distress/illness
• Promotion of social inclusion of mentally and behaviorally fragile individuals
• Co-occurring mental health and substance use treatment
• Co-occurring mental health and medical illness
• Alterations in thinking, perceiving, communicating and functioning related to psychological and physiological distress
• Psychological and physiological distress resulting from physical, interpersonal and/or environmental trauma
• Psychogenesis and individual vulnerability
• Complex clinical presentations confounded by poverty and poor, inconsistent or toxic environmental factors
• Alterations in self-concept related to loss of physical organs and/or limbs, psychiatric trauma, developmental conflicts or injury
• Individual, family or group isolation and difficulty with interpersonal relatedness
• Self-harm and self-destructive behaviors including mutilation and suicide
• Violent behavior including physical abuse, sexual abuse, and bullying
• Low health literacy rates contributing to treatment non-adherence

Directions:

Taking in the above concerns, and applying what you have learned in this week’s readings and learning activities, identify a controversial issue or immediate mental health need in your community that impacts access to, or quality of, mental health care.
Choose one:

• Submit 1-2 page sample letter to your congressman (or elected official) to express your recommendations for changes to policy that would address the issue or need.
• Submit a sample letter to the editor about the issue with recommendations for change.
• Submit 1 page outlining how you would increase public awareness about the situation on your own (health fair, social media, etc).

Your submission must clearly include

• The problem
• The solution- must be evidence-based
• What role (roles), as a PMHNP, you are taking to address this issue
