Protest Art in Public Spaces

This week our journal will focus specifically on art in public spaces which is a topic that we have already touched on briefly. As we know 2020 has been a historical year in so many ways. Due to the social and political climate a new plaza was created in Washington, D.C. to memorialize the victims of police violence and to establish Black Lives Matter as a meaningful social justice movement. As we know public art is very telling about a society and its priorities, and this particular instillation came into fruition because of the unrest that this society is facing. Review the articles below for this week’s submission and put the information into context based on what you already know about art in public spaces. I would like to know if you think an installation such as this is purposeful and informative, and why you do or do not believe so.  https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/06/05/dc-mayor-inaugurates-black-lives-matter-plaza-near-white-house/ https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/some-question-future-of-black-lives-matter-plaza/2468485/ https://www.politico.com/news/2020/07/19/black-lives-matter-murals-369091
