“The Story of An Hour” by Kate Chopin, “A Wall of Fire Rising” by Edwidge Danticat

Write a paper that explores through close reading your ideas about the stories’ significance, carefully explaining how the authors craft their work (using one or more of the basic fictional elements to reveal the stories’ theme(s).) Be sure to provide a close reading of passages to support your thesis. Do not simply provide a plot summary. Assume your reader is familiar with the stories.  Give careful consideration to how the stories are told to reveal the theme or significance. Your thesis needs to make a case for discussing the two stories together in a single, unified essay. For example, do the stories revolve around a similar theme or conflict?  Do the authors employ similar symbolism or irony?  Are topics similar, and yet yield different themes or offer different resolutions? What do you gain by examining the stories side by side? The paper must include a minimum of two credible scholarly sources to help support your thesis.  Keep in mind that the objective is not to write a research paper or biography of the authors, but to present a critical analysis of the texts that stems from your unique reading of the stories. Secondary sources are REQUIRED! The paper must be approximately 5-6 pages (not counting Works Cited) and follow MLA layout and documentation.
