English 3312C     Fall of 2020  Essay #3  Hamlet:                What is the Purpose of Horatio in the Play ?                                     Or, “Why Horatio?”           He is in the following scenes: 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.5, 3.2, 4.5, 4.6, 5.1, & 5.2.                  (FOR THIS ESSAY, FOCUS ON 1.1, 3.2, 5.1, and 5.2)                          Use the Three-Paragraph Format.       First Paragraph: By following Hamlet’s “Arc” in the play, show us what you think to be the tragedy in “The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.”         Second Paragraph: Paraphrase and quote from the scenes, especially from 1.1, 5.1., and 5.2 (especially following Hamlet’s death).       Third Paragraph:  Answer the question.   (Keep in mind that one way of arriving at an answer is to imagine what would happen to the play if Horatio were given a different kind of character or was not in the play at all.)
